About Breakaway Theatre Company
Breakaway Theatre Company was created in 1984 by Tony Peters, to perform a stunning new play, "The Quest", in St Albans Abbey. Under his leadership, the Company went on to establish an impressive local reputation, offering an annual open-air production, usually Shakespeare, in summer and religious drama, new plays and adaptations, in the winter months. Since its inception the Company has maintained and developed its commitment to presenting powerful acts of theatre in exciting and unusual venues and utilising, where possible, original creative disciplines.
How is Breakaway different?
Breakaway is committed to the highest theatrical standard. At the same time, we seek to provide opportunities, support and training to those new to theatre skills, whether acting or technical. Many of our productions are developed to encourage the participation of children, as actors or audience. We initiate new theatrical projects, such as the devising of a play through improvisation. We organise workshops on a variety of skills, to reflect the interests of all members. Cast and crew work together on all aspects of a production.
Where are we?
Breakaway is not limited by the use of a theatre and each production is set in a venue appropriate to its style. We regularly perform in the outdoor amphitheatre at St Albans School, where our summer Shakespeare is produced. Winter productions, many of them promenade, have used a variety of sites: St Albans Abbey; St Albans Town Hall; Francis Bacon School Studio; The Old Town Hall, Hemel Hempstead; Marlborough School; Fleetville Junior School; Abbey Orchard and a pub.
Social
The purpose of Breakaway Theatre Company is to inspire involvement in theatre. However, between productions members meet regularly at 'pub evenings', barn dances, theatre trips, entertainment evenings, at parties - even at rehearsals!
